Travelling from Huelva to the Algarve with your family: destinations, journey times and tips

Travelling from Huelva to the Algarve means crossing into Portugal and reaching some of the best-known destinations in southern Portugal without facing an especially long journey. The eastern Algarve begins almost immediately after crossing the Guadiana, while further west you will find destinations such as Tavira, Faro, Albufeira and Lagos.

For families, however, not every destination offers the same experience. Journey time, the type of beach, the atmosphere, how easy it is to get around with children and the range of available services are all worth considering before choosing where to stay.

In this guide, we look at some of the most interesting Algarve destinations for families travelling from Huelva, together with the main practical points to consider before setting off.

Which part of the Algarve is best for a family trip?

The Algarve stretches across much of southern Portugal and changes considerably as you travel west. It is therefore worth choosing your destination according to the type of holiday you want rather than simply choosing the most famous resort.

Tavira: close to Huelva and with a relaxed atmosphere

Tavira is one of the most attractive towns in the eastern Algarve and an especially convenient option for travellers starting in Huelva. It works well for a day trip, a weekend break or a holiday where you would prefer not to spend too much time on the road.

Its historic centre, the Gilão River, cafés and restaurants, together with access to the beaches of Ilha de Tavira, make it possible to combine sightseeing, food and the coast in a setting that works well for families.

Faro: city, nature and airport

Faro is the capital of the Algarve and offers a different combination of experiences. Alongside its historic centre, it provides access to the Ria Formosa and to several beaches and islands in the surrounding area.

It is also particularly useful for travellers combining a stay in Huelva or on the Costa de la Luz with flights from Faro Airport (FAO).

Albufeira: beaches and a wide range of tourist services

Albufeira is one of the Algarve's best-known holiday destinations. It offers a large selection of hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops and beaches, which can make organising a family holiday much easier.

The journey from Huelva is longer than to destinations in the eastern Algarve, so Albufeira generally makes more sense for a stay of several days than for a short visit.

Lagos: discover another side of the Algarve

Lagos lies further west and requires more time on the road, but it gives visitors access to some of the most characteristic coastal scenery in the western Algarve.

Coves, beaches surrounded by cliffs, coastal walks and its historic centre make Lagos particularly attractive for a family holiday lasting several days.

Travelling to the Algarve with children: what to plan

On a family trip, organising the journey properly can remove much of the stress from the first and last days of the holiday. The number of passengers, luggage and any items required for children should all be considered before travelling.

Child seats

If you travel with Radio Taxi Huelva, child seats can be requested for an additional charge. It is important to mention this when making your booking so that the service can be prepared correctly.

Luggage and pushchairs

In addition to normal luggage, families may need to carry pushchairs, children's bags, folding equipment or other accessories. Providing the number of passengers and an approximate amount of luggage in advance helps us arrange a suitable vehicle.

Larger families and groups

Huelva and Faro Airport

Faro Airport is not only useful for travellers spending their holidays in Portugal. It can also form part of the journey for passengers whose final destination is Huelva or elsewhere in the province.

This makes journeys possible in both directions: travelling from Huelva to catch a flight from Faro, or landing in the Algarve and continuing directly to Huelva, the Huelva coast or another destination in the province.

For families travelling with several suitcases, children or additional equipment, arranging the collection in advance can make this part of the journey much easier.

Car, public transport or direct transfer?

There is no single option that suits every family. The best choice depends on the length of your holiday, your destination and how much travelling you plan to do once you are in Portugal.

Your own car

This can be a very practical option if you plan to visit several beaches and towns during your holiday and want complete freedom to travel around the Algarve.

Hire car

A hire car can work well for longer stays, particularly when arriving by plane and needing a vehicle for several days.

Public transport

Public transport can work for certain journeys, although you will need to adapt your plans to timetables, stops and possible connections. If your accommodation is some distance from the relevant station or stop, an additional journey may also be required.

Taxi or direct transfer

A direct taxi transfer takes you from your collection point to your final address without changing vehicles. It can be particularly convenient when travelling with children and luggage and you want to arrive directly at your accommodation or airport.
