Seville Airport to the Algarve: private transfer, border and destination guide

Seville Airport is a common arrival point for travellers whose final destination is in southern Portugal. Direct transfers can be arranged from SVQ to Vila Real de Santo António, Tavira, Faro, Vilamoura, Albufeira, Portimão, Lagos, Sagres and other Algarve destinations, without travelling into central Seville first or combining several forms of transport.
However, “the Algarve” is too broad a destination to arrange a journey properly. The region stretches from the Spanish border to the south-western tip of Portugal and includes towns, beaches, resorts, residential areas and rural accommodation separated by considerable distances.

Why Seville Airport is a gateway to the Algarve
Seville Airport receives domestic and international flights and can be a useful arrival point for visitors staying in the Algarve. The journey depends heavily on the chosen area: destinations near the Spanish border do not require the same route as Lagos, Aljezur or Sagres.
The road connection generally runs west from Seville towards Huelva and continues into Portugal. After crossing the border, the route changes according to the exact Algarve destination. The entire region should therefore not be planned using Faro as the only reference point.
How we arrange a pickup at Seville Airport
To prepare an international transfer from SVQ, we recommend providing:
- the flight number and departure airport;
- the scheduled arrival date and time;
- the exact town and accommodation in Portugal;
- the number of passengers;
- the approximate number and type of bags;
- whether a child seat is required;
- whether a Taxi Van is needed for a group or additional luggage;
- a telephone number that will work after landing.
The arrivals area at Seville Airport is on the ground floor. After leaving the aircraft, passengers proceed through passport control when required and then to baggage reclaim and Customs.
The flight number identifies the correct arrival
Simply saying “we land at 18:00” does not distinguish between flights with similar schedules. The flight number links the pickup to the correct arrival. If the airline announces a significant change, please let us know as soon as possible.
Crossing the border between Spain and Portugal
Spain and Portugal are both part of the Schengen Area, so there is normally no permanent checkpoint at this internal border. Nevertheless, every traveller should carry the valid identity and travel documents required for their nationality and circumstances.
The booking should include the correct Portuguese destination and a contact number available during the journey. Please also mention specialist equipment, bulky luggage or anything else that may affect the vehicle required.
The time difference: a small detail that causes mistakes
Mainland Portugal is one hour behind mainland Spain. When it is 18:00 in Seville, it is 17:00 in the Algarve. This matters when discussing the arrival time at the accommodation and, especially, when arranging the return transfer to Seville Airport.
To prevent misunderstandings, always specify whether a time is in Spanish or Portuguese local time. For a pickup in the Algarve, the booking should state the local Portuguese pickup time, while the flight departure from Seville is shown in Spanish local time.
Eastern Algarve: the first destinations after the border
The eastern Algarve includes several of the destinations closest to Spain. Vila Real de Santo António, Monte Gordo, Cacela Velha, Tavira and Olhão are distinct places, even though they are often grouped under the same geographical label.
The precise hotel or address is particularly important for coastal developments and accommodation outside the main town centre.
Vila Real de Santo António and Monte Gordo

Cacela Velha and Tavira

Faro and the central Algarve
Faro is the regional capital and a common reference point, but Faro city and Faro Airport are not the same destination. This part of the Algarve also provides routes to Loulé, Vilamoura, Quarteira, Albufeira and other tourist areas.
When travelling to a resort, residential development or golf course, the exact establishment name prevents mistakes and unnecessary additional driving.
Faro city or Faro Airport

Loulé, Vilamoura and Quarteira
Loulé is inland, while Vilamoura and Quarteira are neighbouring coastal destinations. Accommodation advertised within Loulé municipality may actually be in another tourist area, making the full address essential. View transfers to Loulé, Vilamoura and Quarteira.
Albufeira and Armação de Pêra

Carvoeiro, Ferragudo and Silves

Western Algarve: Portimão, Lagos, Aljezur and Sagres
The farther west you travel, the more important it becomes to plan the journey around the real destination. Portimão, Alvor, Lagos, Aljezur and Sagres cannot be calculated as though Faro were the end of the trip.
Resorts, villas, rural accommodation and addresses outside the main towns are also common in this area.
Portimão and Alvor

Lagos

Aljezur and Sagres

Passengers, luggage and choosing the vehicle
The required capacity should not be calculated solely by passenger numbers. Four people with hand luggage need a different amount of space from four people carrying large suitcases, a pushchair, golf clubs or sports equipment.

Common mistakes when booking an Algarve transfer
- Giving only “the Algarve” as the destination. The town and accommodation must be specified.
- Confusing Faro city with Faro Airport. They are different drop-off points.
- Using Loulé when the hotel is in Vilamoura. The municipality does not always match the tourist area.
- Forgetting the Portuguese time difference. This can cause confusion, especially for the return journey.
- Not declaring all luggage. Boot space affects the suitable vehicle.
- Providing the arrival time without the flight number.
- Travelling without valid personal documents.
The return journey from the Algarve to Seville Airport
The service can also be arranged from Portugal to SVQ. The pickup time must account for the starting point, road journey, a reasonable safety margin and the airport arrival time recommended for the flight.
The time difference requires particular attention: the Algarve is one hour behind Seville. For example, an 08:00 pickup in Portugal takes place when it is already 09:00 in Spain. The booking should clearly show the local time at the pickup location.
